The Nigerian government demanded the purchase of a Military aircraft known as “Super Tucano Jet” some months ago. After the agreement was reached between the two governments, the American government agreed and recently, it had been reported that the Tucano jets had arrived in Nigeria.
After the 423 million dollars Super Tucano Jets arrived Nigeria, the United States has said the Nigerian government is expected to use the military aircraft only in the northern part of the country where Boko Haram terrorists have been engaging the Army and civilians in a deadly battle for years.
According to Punch News, Jonathan Finer, who represented the US government pointed out that the agreement reached between the Nigerian & US government during the purchase of the 12 Tucano aircraft, the agreement of using it against the terrorists in the North must be kept or the aircraft would be deactivated if the government uses it in the South East region against the Biafran agitators.
This statement came after a question on whether the Tucano fighter Military aircraft might be used against separatists in the South-East, Finer said the aeroplanes were an important platform for security, particularly in the North, expressing pleasure over the conclusion of the deal.
In his statement, Jonathan Finer said,
“ We are pleased to consolidate our security cooperation with the Nigerian government. I suppose we made it clear our prospects about this platform where it would be used and in the right way and we are always raising places when we have them and that it’s true with all our security mates around the world. This is an important platform for security, particularly in the North and we’re pleased the sale is eventually concluded.”
” The Federal Government of Nigeria had labelled the Indigenous People of Biafra in the South-East and despite public roar, designated the agitation group as terrorists, fuelling fears that the Super Tucano might be stationed to kill the residents of the region, it’s important to note that if the Super Tucano aircraft is used against the Southeast or any other place other than the North East which is ravaged by the Boko Haram Terrorists, we would have no choice than to deactivate it ourselves as it violates our agreement”.
From the statement of Jonathan Finer, the people of the South East shouldn’t worry about the aircraft being deployed to the region as the USA had made it decision on how and where it would be used. Earlier, it had also been reported that the service hadn’t been suitable to use the Tucano aeroplanes to crush the bandits in the North-West because the agreement signed with the United States was that the aircraft, bought from the US, would be used against terrorists and not bandits. This implies that the fighter aeroplanes have only been prepared to fight Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East.
It was gathered that the complaints by the service chiefs led to the recent recommendation to by the Senate and the House of Representatives that bandits should be designated as terrorists, so the aeroplanes could be stationed against the bandits.
The Federal Government had ordered 12A-29 Super Tucano aircraft in order to continue to fight against Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East.
