Sexual Desire: What Is It And At What Age Does It Begin To Decline

We could describe sexual desire as a phase of appetite or impulse prior to arousal produced by the activation of a specific neural system in the brain. Another valid definition would be: interest in sex and in being sexual.

According to the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), it has three interrelated components:

– opponent: It manifests as sexual thoughts and fantasies, erotic attraction to others, seeking sexual activity, tingling, or genital sensitivity. This varies depending on daily activities, stress, and each person.

 – beliefs, values, and expectations: Our first impulse may be tempered by personal attitudes, culture, or religious beliefs.

– motivation: This third and final component involves your willingness to behave sexually at any given time and with a particular partner. According to NAMS, for a woman, motivation is the most complex component of desire. Generally speaking, a loving relationship is often required for most women to experience desire.

In both men and women, it is normal for sexual desire to decrease, but women are two to three times more likely to be affected by a decrease in sexual desire as they age.

Reduced sex drive has become much more common in women in their 40s and 50s. The age factor also differs from person to person, NAMS notes. Some women experience a large decrease in sexual desire beginning in middle age, while others do not notice any change, and some report a greater interest in sex in middle age.

Menopause influences sexual desire. In fact, during the transition to this phase, the physical effects of falling estrogen levels (hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness) can undermine motivation and sexual drive.

The most common complaint among women is hypoactive sexual desire disorder, when decreased desire is a concern due to the impact on sexual life and quality of life in general.

Cause of lower sex drive

According to this organization, the causes of decreased desire are complex. Scientific studies have consistently shown that about one-third of American women report having low sexual desire or interest, and that this low desire is of concern to about one in three of those women.

A large scientific study of American women with low sex drives found that they were more likely to be concerned if:

She was currently in a relationship with a partner.

They were between 35 and 64 years old.

They were depressed.

In addition to these main factors, a number of other factors also influenced (to a lesser degree) whether women were bothered by their lack of desire. These included urinary incontinence, anxiety, social skills, and whether the women also had problems with arousal or orgasm.
