Rivers State Shut Down All Illegal Oil Bunkering Sites

The Rivers State Governor has ordered the shut down of all illegal oil bunkering sites that cause black soot pollution in the capital of Rivers State, Port Harcourt.

In his new year broadcast, which was directed by the Mayor of Port Harcourt, Nyesom Wike was ordered to go after all illegal oil refining sites in all adjoining areas of Port Harcourt, along Creek Road, and shut them down with immediate effect.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has also directed all local government chairmen to work with community leaders to identify and locate any institutions or personnel involved in crude oil refining or illegal oil bunkering in their area, and to report them to his office for further action.

The state governor said the state government does not have any option but to take these necessary measures to tackle this challenge because federal security agencies do not agree to stop the activities of illegal crude oil refining activities.

He said they drew the attention of the Nigerian Federal Government to stop and intervene in illegal oil bunkering activities, which they identified as the main sources of the soot pandemic, but the Nigerian Federal Government remained silent on the issue.

“We are as concerned as the general public about the black soot environmental disaster which has continued to envelop Port Harcourt residents for quite some time.”

“As a state government, we have drawn the attention of the federal government to this problem and requested their intervention to stop illegal oil bunkering and crude oil refinery activities, which we have identified as the main sources of the soot problem.”

“Unfortunately, the Federal Government has remained silent on this request and even though they are complicit to a large extent as security agencies actively encourage, assist, and protect the artisan refiners to continue with their harmful activities without stop.” Nyesom Wike said.
