Professor Gianpaolo Tartaro has stated that Victor Osimhen of Napoli will not be fit to represent Nigeria in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held next month. Only a miracle would see the striker play in Cameroon, he added.
Nigeria and the striker, who is determined to represent the three-time champions at the AFCON, may be dealt a major blow by the latest medical update.
After suffering several fractures in his face in a collision with Inter defender Milan Skriniar on November 21, Osimhen was initially ruled out of the biggest African football spectacular, which will be held in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2022.
After a few weeks of individual training, the former Lille player was included to Nigeria’s 28-man AFCON roster list by Super Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen.
Osimhen’s surgeon, Tartaro, told Corriere Dello Sport that the midfielder required extra time to heal after his operation in November.
“According to global protocols, the development of the callus bone takes anywhere from sixty to ninety days. Unless something miraculous happens,” the surgeon was quoted as saying.
“We won’t be able to dissolve the prognosis if he doesn’t undergo the CT scan.” Reduced fractures must consolidate: I repeat, unless a Christmas biological miracle occurs, you must wait two or three months for the creation of the callus: but biology is not a fan.”
Osimhen was a member of the Eagles’ third-place finish at the 2019 Afcon, where Odion Ighalo led the team with five goals.
