NFF Names Portuguese Jose Peseiro As New Super Eagles Coach

As widely anticipated, the Nigeria Football Federation on Wednesday 29 December appointed 61-year-old Portuguese, Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles.

Disclosing this in a release, which this writer was privy to, the football body stated that the former Real Madrid assistant coach will be at the AFCON in Cameroun as an observer and take over the reins from interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, who will take charge of the team at the 24-nation football showpiece starting on January 9.

The release read in parts: “After careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee, the Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles , following the end of the relationship with Mr Gernot Rohr. However, the Committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroun with Mr Peseiro only playing the role of Observer.”

Born José Vítor dos Santos Peseiro had a modest playing career as a forward before venturing into coaching in 1994. He has so far held the reins at many clubs, including União Santarém, União Montemor, Oriental, Nacional, Real Madrid,
Sporting CP, Al Hilal, Panathinaikos, Rapid București, Braga, Al Wahda, Al hly, Porto, Sharjah, Vitória Guimarães.
