Meet Chile’s Youngest Ever President

In Chile, voters elected the country’s youngest president, Gabriel Boric.

Gabriel Boric, a left-wing former student activist, is thirty-five years old, and his far-right rival, José Antonio Kast, agreed that Gabriel Boric defeated him less than 90 minutes after polls closed last Sunday.

In a tweet which was posted by José Antonio Kast, he said that he had called his rival, Gabriel Boric, to congratulate him on his great triumph.

“From today, he is the elected President of Chile and deserves all our respect and constructive collaboration,” he added.

With most of the votes counted by the authorities, Gabriel Boric won with 56% and José Antonio Kast followed with 44% of the votes.

Gabriel Boric was a former student protest leader. He supported the mass protest against alleged inequality and corruption that happened in Chile in the years 2019 and 2020.

He began student activism in high school, and in the year 2011, while he was studying law at the University of Chile, they elected him as leader of their student union.

In 2011, college students started a big protest against inequity and low public funding in Chile’s education system, which Gabriel Boric argued that they treat human rights like consumer goods.

Marches and university occupations forced the Chilean government to discuss, which finally brought major educational reforms.

In the year 2013, they elected Gabriel Boric to Congress for Magallanes as an independent. Since then, Gabriel Boric has gone round through membership of different parties, most recently Social Convergence, which was set up to challenge Chile’s longstanding center-left and far-left blocs.

According to the United Nations, Chile, which was once the most stable economy in Latin America, had one of the world’s largest income gaps, with 1 percent of the population owning 25% of Chile’s wealth.

Gabriel Boric promised to address inequality by reforming Chile’s healthcare and pension systems, reducing the work week from 40 to 45 hours, and increasing green investment.
