Nigeria Football Federation has rubished reports Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen axed Leicester City forward Ademola Lookman from 2020 Africa Cup of Nations starting January 9 in Cameroun.

In a post on its social media handles on Thursday, the football body stated that FIFA had yet to clear the 24-year-old’s switch allegiance to Nigeria after representing England at various international youth levels, and that the process for his switch was ongoing.

“The process for his switch in ongoing. It is therefore incorrect for any medium to claim that interim Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen is the one who axed the player from Nigeria’s final list of 28 for the Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021. However, his name was included in the initial provisional list with the believe that the process would have been completed before the commencement of Afcon, ” the statement read in parts.

NFF reacted to a recent viral report suggesting the player’s name was expunged from Nigeria’s 28-man list for the 24-nation football showpiece after being included in the provisional aquad by former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr.

Lookman, who won the. U20 World Cup with England, only recently declared his interest to represent Nigeria at senior level after rebuffing NFF’s overtures on three previous occasions, expecting a call-up to the Three Lions.

RB Leipzig earlier in the year.

He scored the only goal that gave the Foxes a morale-boasting win over Liverpool on Wednesday, and was also on target in 6-3 defeat at Manchester City two days earlier.
