Ighalo Graces Ajegunle Carnival, Promises To Keep Helping Residents

Nigeria international and Al Shabab of Saudi Arabia striker, Odion Jude Ighalo is delighted to be part of 2021 Salami Street Carnival, a yearly event in Ajegunle, Lagos, where he was born.

The 32-year-old shared his excitement in a statement on her Instagram page on Tuesday, promising to keep helping both young and old residents of Ajegunle, and highlighting values he has added to their lives through Odion Ighalo Foundation.

The Africa Cup of Nations-bound player accompanied his post with the picture above, which shows him addressing participants at the carnival at Christmas.

The statement read: “It’s always a privilege to go back to where I was born and be part of the Salami Street Carnival. It’s an opportunity for me to be source of inspiration to the youths on Salami Street and Ajegunle at large.

“Through the Odion Ighalo Foundation, so many youths have been empowered through entreprenural skills, while some are in the Ighalo Football Academy . I’ll continue to do my best in order to help my people become successful from the street where I grew up. Not only the youths but also adults and widows in the streets. May God continue to empower me and my team. Ajegunle to the world!.”

A devout Christian, Ighalo, who is the only Nigeria footballer to play for Manchester United, spends a large percentage of his earnings on charity. He runs an orphanage, a football academy, cares for widows and several other persons below the poverty line in Ajegunle, a Lagos city renowned for producing footballers and musicians.

He was born and bred in the city where his mother struggled to support his football career and dropped out of school to focus on the game that has brought him both fame and fortune, becoming one of the richest and vastly travelled Nigerian footballers. He started his career at Prime FC of Ogbomosho in 2005 before going on to lace boots for Julius Berger, Lyn, Udinese, Granada, Cesena, Watford, Changchun Yatai, Shanghai Shenhua,
Manchester United and current club Al Shabab where he so far scored 18 goals in 26 matches.

He has three children, two sons and one daughter, and was on 22 June 2021 unveiled as an Ambassador of the National Principal’s Cup in Abuja by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare.
