BREAKING: Lionel Messi makes history, wins 7th Ballon d’Or

Barcelona Legend and Argentine Captain, Lionel Messi has been named the 2021 Ballon d’Or winner.

The 34-year-old Argentine attacker was named the world’s best player for the seventh time at a star-studded ceremony in Paris on Monday evening.

After beating out heavy opposition from the likes of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, and Chelsea’s Jorginho, it’s a record seventh time overall.
For weeks, speculation had grown that the Argentine was a shoe-in for soccer’s highest individual honor.
The Ballon d’Or, created by journalist Gabriel Hanot of France Football magazine, is usually regarded as the most prestigious trophy in football.

Stanley Matthews of Blackpool, England, was the first winner, but Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United and Real Madrid have dominated the twenty-first century, winning 12 times between them.

Lionel Messi is the first player to win the Ballon d’Or seven times, at least two more than any other player.
