As the African Cup Of Nations ( AFCON ) is fast approaching, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) & the Premier League seems to have reached an agreement as CAF had made a satisfactory agreement on the release of African players for the tournament.
The Africa Cup Of Nations would kick start on the 9th day of January and end on the 6th day of February in 2022 and the central African nation, Cameroon is expected to host the tournament.
Reports suggest that about 40 African players are expected to be released from their European football Clubs to feature in their national team squad.
Earlier, the scheduled date for the African Cup Of Nations ( January-February ) caused mixed reactions from the premier League teams especially Liverpool as most of their top players are Africans and would be released for AFCON.
To lessen the tensions, CAF decided to allow African players to keep featuring for their European teams till the 3rd of January before joining their national teams.
This recent decision made by CAF is a welcomed one by most European teams that have African stars as one of their top players; before the decision of the Confederation of African football, some clubs had previously tried to keep their top African players as long as they want.

When speaking on this new development, CAF stated that this decision is to make up for the European teams that would be affected by the January-February schedule of the African Cup Of Nations and to make the clubs know that no negative intentions were made by CAF when changing the AFCON schedule.
In reacting to the decision of CAF, FIFA acknowledged it and added that the world football body had accepted the decision of CAF in making a decision that would promote the collaboration between the European teams and African football organizations.
Previously, the AFCON was scheduled for the June/July period as at this period, an international break took place but recently, AFCON had to be rescheduled to January as,
during the June/July period, Cameroon ( the host country ) would experience bad weather as it’s the peak of the rainy season in the Central African country.
