AFCON: Awoniyi should replace Osimhen not Ighalo – Fans

Fans expect Taiwo Awoniyi, a striker for Union Berlin, to be the immediate substitute for Victor Osimhen, who is injured, at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon next year.

The AFCON will be held from January 9 to February 6, but the Super Eagles will be without their star striker Osimhen, who has been ruled out for at least three months after undergoing surgery on his fractured cheekbone on Tuesday.

In their 3-2 loss to the champions on Sunday, the 22-year-old was injured after colliding with Inter defender Milan Skriniar.

Since the retirement of former Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo following the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, where he was an understudy, the Napoli striker has been the Eagles’ first choice striker.
should be brought in, he’s not a threat to Ighalo,”

Fans believe that in-form Union Berlin striker Awoniyi, ahead of Paul Onuachu, Terem Moffi, Emmanuel Dennis, and Cyriel Dessers, should receive the nod to fill the spot now that the striker is out of the tournament.

Fans have reacted to the news by urging the Nigeria Football Federation and national team coach to give Awoniyi top priority over returning Odion Ighalo and others for the position.

Damilare Eluwole tweeted, “Taiwo Awoniyi should be brought in, he is clear of Ighalo.”

“Gutted for him (Osimhen),” commented @TheKunle (Osimhen). “Taiwo Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis must be summoned by Nigeria.”

“Ighalo should not come in ahead of Taiwo Awoniyi or Emmanuel Dennis in the starting lineup. The game’s tempo will be slowed. He’s an adequate forward now, but he’s no better than anyone else in that position,” Babajide Guerrero said.

“Now that Victor Osimhen is out, we have a lot of options,” Adeola Amokomowo tweeted. Terem Moffi Cyriel Desser, Taiwo Awoniyi, Paul Onuachu We have a lot of possibilities.”
