8 Reasons Why Your Pages Are Not Showing In Rich Snippets

Before, the search results were presented in a fairly sober way: the page consisted of ten links with a short description for each of them. In recent years, things have changed a lot and the appearance of “rich snippets” or even “  featured snippets  ” has changed the situation. These new features capture the attention of users to the detriment of traditional links.

You have therefore added structured data to your site with the appropriate semantic tags, so that your results are displayed in the best possible way.

However, after performing another Google search, your site is still just a blue link like any other. No stars, or photo, no particular highlight … Why the structured data of your page does not appear in Google?

This article covers the top reasons why your semantic markup isn’t showing up in Google results. We will see that everything is not your responsibility.

1. Rich snippets are not systematic

First of all, there is no guarantee that your page will appear in search results with the specified characteristic. Adding structured data to your site makes you eligible for certain rich results, but without guarantees. Even if you set everything up perfectly in the code and no mistakes were made, Google may find that displaying a rich result would not be very useful for users.

In this case, there is little you can do.

Google doesn’t discover changed content instantly – it does so the next time you crawl a site.

Check that your XML sitemap has the <lastmod> attribute, to signal to Google that the pages need to be reindexed.

You can also force Google to re-index the page in Search Console’s URL inspector. Even so, it may take a little while for the rich search results to appear.

3. Content is not indexed or cannot be crawled

Content, including images, must be publicly crawlable and indexable by Google to be eligible for rich results.

Check that you are not blocking your structured data pages from crawlers like Googlebot using robots.txt, noindex, or other access control methods.

You can use the URL inspection tool in Google Search Console to check if a URL is indexed, or if it isn’t, for possible issues.

4. Your structured data does not meet Google’s quality standards

Google reserves the right not to display your structured data if it considers that it is not of quality. Here are some of the quality standards Google expects from markup:

  • Provide up-to-date information.
  • Provide original content that you (or your users) have created.
  • Do not tag irrelevant content.
  • Do not promote activities that are illegal or harmful to others.
  • No blasphemy
  • No vulgar language

5. Pictures may not meet requirements or dimensions

In general, Google requires that rich snippet images meet the following requirements:

  • Unless otherwise specified, images must be a minimum of 160 × 90 pixels and a maximum of 1920 × 1080 pixels (with specific exceptions below)
  • The aspect ratio should not be greater than 3.0
  • The format must be .jpg, .png or .gif
  • Images must be crawlable and indexable
  • Images must be in high resolution (minimum 800K pixels)
  • Provide multiple images for each of the following ratios: 16 × 9, 4 × 3, and 1 × 1
  • Images must be relevant to the content

6. Your structured data tagging is a mess

This is the most common reason why rich snippets don’t appear on SERP pages. Even the slightest coding problem can prevent Google from understanding the markup and prevent it from displaying it.

A common error occurs when elements of are not nested properly or when prematurely closing (and sometimes forgetting to close) a <div>.

Every open HTML tag must be closed! If the tags are not properly closed, Google’s structured data reader will likely not read the correct nesting and be unable to process the information.

7. Your tagged content is not visible to the user

You need to make sure that the structured data content is visible and not hidden behind click events or CSS. If Google, or your visitors, cannot see the information that you have marked with structured data, Google considers this a deceptive practice.

8. Google thinks your site is unreliable

Make sure that your site is served in HTTPS, and that you only integrate HTTPS content on HTTPS pages … If Google does not believe in the authenticity of your domain, the risk is great that it will not grant you the right to appear in its rich snippets!
