2022 AWCON: Super Falcons Intensify Training In Abuja Ahead Of Ivory Coast Clash

Nigeria’s senior women’s National team, the Super Falcons are currently intensifying training in Abuja, preparatory to 2022 African Women’s Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Cote d’Ivoire in February.

This writer gathered that 29 players took part in the team’s third training session on Wednesday morning as the Randy Walldrum’s charges are leaving no margin for errors to ensure they scale the last hurdle to the finals Morocco next summer.

To this end, the nine-time African champions set up a 9-day training camp at the Federal Capital Territory, which started from Monday 22 November.

Cote d’Ivoire, one of the emerging forces in women’s football, eliminated Nigeria from the race to 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Lady Elephants drew goalless with Nigeria in the first leg at Parc des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan and were forced to a 1-1 draw by Nigeria in the corresponding tie at Agege Stadium in Lagos, to book a spot at the Olympics.

The defeat have beeñ weighing heavily on the minds of the Super Falcons, who will be gunning for a revenge in the two-legged fixture, with the first leg holding in Lagos on 14 February while the return leg will take place in Abidjan four days later.

Super Falcons are by far Africa’s most successful women’s team, having won Africa Women Cup of Nations a record nine times, with their most recent title in 2018, after defeating South Africa in the final.

The are also the only women’s national team in Africa to have reached the quarterfinals in both the FIFA Women’s World Cup and Football at the Summer Olympics.

The team have been quite vulnerable in recent times, losing 4-2 to South Africa in the final of the maiden edition of Aisha Buhari Invitational Tournament in September and battled to a standstill by the likes of Ghana, Cameroun and Mali.

They defeated Ghana 5-1 to win their first African title in 1991, their biggest win was 15-0 defeat of Niger Republic in Côte d’Ivoire on 11 May 2019 while their biggest defeat is 8–0, which they suffered in the hands of Norway 1995, Germany 2010 and France 2018.
